Summary One major cause of mortality of small cetaceans in the North and Baltic Sea is, next to environmental pollution and ship traffic, bycatch in fisheries. Different types of fishing gear have different bycatch rates and in areas with significantly higher numbers of small cetaceans mortality is higher. Within the Common Fishery Policy (CFP) one of the goals is to minimize negative impacts of the fishery on marine mammals. The information about various distribution areas and actual stock sizes, as well as, actual bycatch rates in the commercial fishery is collected by scientific observers on board commercial fishing vessels. The Institute of Sea Fisheries (SF) carries out projects together with the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) and the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) to quantify populations of small cetaceans and their interactions with the fishery, in order to develop the necessary expertise for the possible implementation of conservation areas and technical conservation measures. (ASCOBANS = Agreement on the Conservation of Small Cetaceans of the Baltic and North Seas) Participating institutions: Research and Technology Centre (FTZ) of the Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel, Germany.
