The project will contribute to advice on the sustainable management of pelagic fish stocks of commercial interest to the UK, including North Sea mackerel for which there is considerable political interest. The project will also demonstrate the UK's ability to apply the ecosystem approach to fisheries management- one of the key pillars of the reformed Common Fisheries Policy. The project will improve understanding of mackerel in the North Sea and assess the small pelagic fish community in the south west of England. By integrating the data with that from other studies and through collaborative work with other EU countries, this work will contribute to a greater understanding of the spatio-temporal dynamics of pelagic stocks and the primary environmental forcers of their abundance.
