The goal of the project was to design, develop and test a selective trawl, which reduces the by-catch of cod, while still retaining high catch rates of flatfish, Norway lobster and anglerfish. A second requirement was that the trawl should be simple and fast to deploy and recover. The project tested different possibilities to improve the selectivity of a cod end with a 140 mm sorting panel, as implemented in the fishing regulations. This included changes in mesh size of the panel and changes in panel position. For different combinations of panel mesh sizes and panel positions, size selectivity functions were determined, to allow for designing the optimal configuration for different mixed fisheries.
