The research project aimed at the evaluation of population consistency of cuttlefish Sepia officinalis in the coastal area of Abruzzo (central Italy, Adriatic Sea) and its relation with eventual temperature increases following climatic changes. In this area, at the end of winter (March-April), cuttlefish migrate from cold deep waters toward warmer coastal waters where they reproduce. Cuttlefish small-scale fishery in this area is allowed from the 15th of March to the 30th of September but fishermen asked the Regional Government to adapt the legal fishery period to the migration behaviour of cuttlefish. Two different fishery gears, bottom traps and trammel net, were used to test their efficiency in capturing cuttlefish. Temperature trends in the study area were analysed in order to manage the legal period of capture for this fishery resource. Goals: (1) To verify increase in seawater temperature in the study area during the last 15 years; (2) To verify recruitment times of Sepia officinalis in the study area; (3) To evaluate the possibility of manage the legal period of fishery of this resource.
