The fishing industry has lately been interested in a new trawl that allows fishing cod, haddock and saithe without bottom contact, and which can significantly reduce the drag and thus fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The problem is that the selective properties of existing selection systems - rigid sorting grids - get compromised because of the relative high density of fish when they are found pelagic. This project is aimed at developing a selection system based on net panels (Exit Windows or T90), which has significantly larger sorting capacity than current grid systems: Sort-X, Sort-V, Flexigrid. The new system will sort out fish in front of the rear most part of the codend to enhance the survival of escaping fish; and will be light and easy to handle on deck. Further, assessment of energy consumption of mid-water trawling will be performed and compared with that of demersal trawling. The project will be carried out by SINTEF Fisheries and Aquaculture, in cooperation with the Norwegian College of Fishery Science, the Fisheries and Aquaculture Research Fund and the Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries.
