ICARUS Design AS has cooperated with Mr. Jostein Størksen, Innovation Norway and Fiskarlaget to develop the preliminary design of a new innovative Speedshark fishing boat. Mr. Størksen who is a commercial fisherman on the west coast of Norway realised the need for a faster and more seaworthy speedshark that would allow him and other fisherman to transit quickly from their fishing grounds to port with their stocks of fish. Of primary importance was to be able to reach the fishing grounds in good time, have good seakeeping abilities in rough seas and have a good load carry capability. The HYSUCAT (HYdrofoil SUpported CATamran) is a development of Stellenbosch University in South Africa and over 300 vessels ranging from 5m to 36m in length have been built using the HYSUCAT system. As the name implies, the HYSUCAT is a catamaran hull that makes use of a set of hydrofoils located at keel depth inside the tunnel. The hydrofoils carry 40-60% of the boat weight at speed, lifting the hull partially out of the water. This brings numerous advantages, the most important of which are: (1) Increased speed; (2) Lower fuel consumption; (3) Improved seakeeping; (4) Reduced wake wash; (5) Improved high speed manoeuvring. The HYSUCAT is particularly suited to achieving these benefits for heavily loaded craft that operate at planning speeds. The Speedshark HYSUCAT project was focused at developing a concept and preliminary design for a Speedshark making use of a HYSUCAT hull. A hull was specifically developed based on previous experience of using catamaran hulls in rough water off the coasts of south Africa and a HYSUCAT foil system designed to suite. The final results of the preliminary design showed that it is possible to design a HYSUCAT that can meet the requirements of a Speedshark fishing boat. Goal: development a preliminary design of a Speedshark HYSUCAT hydrofoil supported catamaran to fulfil the requirements of small fishing boats in Norway.
