Summary Over the years, a number of fishing vessels under 15 meters have sunk, and many of these have sunk has happened because the vessel has had instability. In connection with these shipwrecks have several fishermen lost their lives. Lack of stability may be due to the vessel not being built with good enough stability margins, but also due to conversion, for example, many minor changes overall have great significance for stability. It is important that the vessel's master has a good knowledge of the vessel's stability, and has an understanding for how stability may change as a result of load placement, equipment rigging and change in type of fishing. This stability guide provides information on basic principles for stability and stability calculations, as well as guidance on understanding and interpreting a vessel's stability calculations. The stability issue is highlighted in the form of specific cases with examples of both stability-promoting and stability-damaging changes to the vessel. We hope with this stability guide to be able to provide greater knowledge of, and understanding of, what stability is, and strengthen the awareness of how important it is that the vessel has good at all times stability. The goal is first and foremost to help reduce the number of accidents that occur due to stability failure, and further to prevent situations where it is close due to poor stability on going wrong.
