The pilot project will be used to clarify topics that will form the basis for a GDP application on the topic of maritime safety in northern waters. The work with the application will be based on results from the preliminary project "Comprehensive plan for increased maritime safety". This preliminary project was carried out in the period February to October 2010 and resulted in the memorandum "Maritime safety - a common challenge". The pilot project was led by a project group with participants from the Norwegian Coastal Administration, MARINTEK and Norut Narvik on behalf of Maritimt Forum Nord. This project was financially supported by the Norwegian Coastal Administration and the Regional Committee and had a reference group with around 20 participants from companies and organizations that worked on maritime safety-related topics. The memorandum contains proposals for a number of activities that should be worked on further. The pilot project for which the Research Council is now applying for support will be used to put together a collaborative group that will prepare a BIP application with special focus on challenges related to maritime safety in northern waters as a result of changes in activity level and sailing patterns, Maritime Forum Nord will identify and contact potential pre-project participants from the Arctic maritime cluster (which is being established). To assist Maritimt Forum Nord with the preparation of a BIP application, MARINTEK and Ocean Futures will be engaged. Form of work for the preliminary project will be: - an introductory conference call with potential consortium members - preparation and circulation of a draft of a GDP application - incorporation of input from consortium members and preparation of updated application - working meeting for review of updated application (January 2011) - correction, preparation and submission of final GDP application (February 2011)
