Sustainability of spiny spider crab and shrimp populations: study of the impact of the fishing activity in the reproductive potential and effective size of natural populations

The management of seafood natural populations is based on a quote capture and exploitation days system, which does not obey robust scientific criteria. Seafood populations are generally managed in accordance to captures from previous years, regardless of the current condition of stocks. Currently management measures for some fishery resources can affect the population structure of exploited populations, and they must be organized on a less generalist scale, as it i's known that not every mature individual actually contributes to genetic variability of populations. The general aim of this project is to analyse the potential effect of fisheries activity on different facets of reproductive biology that are directly related to the reproductive potential and also to the effective population size, as well as the health, in terms of genetic variability, of the stocks. To achieve this objectivegoal we propose to study two species of a high commercial value, which are under an intense fishery activity, namely the spider crab, Maja brachydactyla, end the (atlantic) shrimp, Palaemon serratus. These species present important differences on distinct biological aspects (sexual dimorphism, size, final moult, energy invested on reproduction, fertility, etc.), which are closely related to the reproductive potential of their populations.
