SPELMED study carried out genetic analysis to identify the "family" relations between populations of sardine and of anchovy in different areas. It was able to provide new information such as natural mortality or growth rates that are used to assess the status of those species, improving this way the sustainability and competitiveness of those fisheries. Results were presented in November 2018 to the GFCM WGSASP (Working Group on Fisheries Assessment for Small Pelagic species of the FAO General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean). The new data from SPELMED were incorporated to the assessment of the fish stocks and much appreciated by the scientific community.
