Summary In the frame of this project we will, for the first time, use the ecosystem approach of fisheries in two areas having particular environmental characteristics (the Ionian Sea from Greece and the Romanian Black Sea coast). In both study areas there is overfishing in the last recent years, which, in relation to the aggravated situation of the environment and specific environmental conditions, requires a different management of fisheries, taking into account all the ecological components. There will be a complete description and comparison of all the biotic and abiotic parameters, we will fully explain the fishing industry and the legal regime governing fisheries and the environment. We will also carry out a study on the socio-economic dimensions of fisheries in the two study areas. These data will be used to investigate the application of the ecosystem approach to fisheries in both countries and will be an essential research tool for fisheries managers. This program will be used as a trigger for the further development of scientific cooperation between the two countries.
The purpose of this proposal is the investigation and the formulation of principles for implementing the ecosystem approach to fisheries. This undertaking will be done by collecting data that will adequately cover the structure and functioning of the whole ecosystem in the Ionian Sea and the Romanian Black Sea coast, at a different, holistic level, in order to more fully develop the identified pillars. This project will help the official management fishery authorities of the two countries to understand more correctly the actual dimensions of the maritime administration of the Ionian and the Romanian coast, to support local communities to further develop their knowledge and, thus, their environmental conscience becoming a product of creative reflection of researchers of both countries. The comparison between two very different from the ecological and fishery point of view marine areas will contribute to the improvement of the existing knowledge. This collection will serve as a future tool for creating a management system where fishing activities would be compatible with the sustainable protection of the entire marine ecosystem and will significantly help the development of methodologies for modelling the distribution of species with the aim of identifying spatial and temporal changes in habitat areas in the Ionian Sea and the Black Sea.
