This research project is aimed at the collection of information on the gillnet for sole, particularly on issues relating to the capture efficiency and selectivity in relation to different measures of the meshes. The study is particularly important in view of the economic and biological value of the target species exploited with this technique. In particular, sole, because of its abundance in the study area, is undoubtedly the most important species representing, for the fleet of Livorno, the "target" of this type of fishing. The study was focused on the experimentation of gillnets with different mesh sizes, in order to assess their impact on the resources. The experiment was aimed at assessing if the nets for sole of 76.0, 80.0 and 84.0 mm stretched mesh size showed significant differences in the species composition of the catches, quantities of commercial and non-commercial species, demographic structures of the main species and economic performance of the total catch and the most important species.
