The main activities of the project consist of two PhD projects: Ecosystem approach and outer continental shelf. The point of departure of the project is the intensified uses of the oceans of the high north, e.g. petroleum, fishing and shipping, and the environmental challenges. Legal questions are raised and will be addressed through the project. In the first sub-project integrated management is addressed, particularly focusing on the concept or principle of ecosystem approach and its implications. It will primarily have a theoretical approach. The second sub-project deals with legal issues pertaining to the identification of the continental shelf limits, important preconditions for the resource management. The main objective is to map and analyse the legal framework for the use of the oceans of the high north and contribute to legal theory on the subject.
