The project aims to fill critical voids in the knowledge of a particularly vulnerable pelagic shark commonly caught as by-catch in pelagic longline fisheries, the big eye thresher Alopias supercilious. The species is considered to have a particularly vulnerable life history, but it is one of the least studied of all pelagic sharks and therefore more research is urgently required. Calls for more research on this species has been requested by management bodies as well as by non-governmental conservation organizations. (1) Determination of life history parameters including age, growth, reproduction and mortality; (2) Application of satellite telemetry tags (PAT) to study long term movements, habitat preferences and survivorship of these sharks in the Atlantic Ocean; (3) Population genetics comparing different stocks along the Atlantic Ocean and; (4) Disseminate the results among different fora, from scientific Conferences to regional, national and international advisory and management bodies.
