The overall aim of this research project was to assess the resources of small pelagic species, and in particular the population of sardine (Sardina pilchardus) along the Sicilian coasts involved in the fishing of juveniles. The aim is to define management plans for whitebait fishing for in the framework of EU derogations in the Mediterranean Sea. This research project has as its overall objective the definition of the state of the resources of the population of sardine (Sardina pilchardus) in the Sicilian coastal fishing communities involved in the fishing of juveniles, for the purposes of the definition of management plans, in support of the request for derogation to the EU Regulations in the Mediterranean Sea. The assessment of the sustainability of the removal of juveniles is the basis of assessment of the amount may be withdrawn and the related measures (quotas, fishing seasons, etc..) to be taken.
