The UK requires evidence to inform the developing European Union, United Nations (UN), and Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) fisheries management plans applicable to deep water ecosystems, specifically to better understand the trade-offs between the impact that such measures will have on the UK fishing industry and environmental benefits to be realised. The project will: (1) Quantify the known and predicted extent of deep sea Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems (VMEs) and how this relates to the sustainability of deep sea commercial fish stocks; (2) To understand and quantify the actual risks which bottom fisheries pose to VMEs through an integrated spatial/temporal analysis of fishing activity and VME data; (3) To understand how the spatial patterns of fishing activity and seabed biogenic/biodiversity "hotspots" change with depth, e.g. from shallow shelf sea to deep sea ecosystems.
