Pricing of pelagic fish is largely based on individual weight and established weight classes. It is therefore of great importance to have a good estimate of the weight distribution of the fish in the entire value chain, from catch to product — from on board vessels to processing at reception facilities. The weight distribution estimate is used when the catch is to be auctioned off, and is thus the basis for an estimate of the pricing agreed between the receiving facility and the vessel. In collaboration with equipment supplier (MMC Tendos) and vessels, SINTEF Fisheries and Aquaculture has carried out initial work on the development of a system for automatic sampling and weight estimation based on machine inspection on board. This project could lead to the development of a new system for automatic weight estimation on board. This will be able to: • facilitate the work for the fishermen on board (HSE) • rationalize the operation on board - free up manpower • provide a more accurate measure of the size distribution of the catch
