Summary BIVALVE is a state-of-the-art project that will work with more than one bivalve species and on multiple known and emerging/novel pathogens at several cultured/fished sites. This highly engaged and grassroots research approach will facilitate the gathering and creation of substantial datasets (bivalve biomass/density, pathogen diversity and prevalence, bivalve performance, growth and reproduction, and environmental parameters, etc.) that will feed models to ultimately decipher patterns/correlations and predict future scenarios (threats/risks/opportunities) for the Irish bivalve sector. BIVALVE will also quantify and evaluate the ecosystem services (nutrient recycling, biodiversity, and cultural importance) bivalve stocks contribute to healthy coastal ecosystems and their input to help fight climate change. Such activity will not only support the sustainable growth of this sector but will also highlight this industries’ contribution to maintaining healthy seas, fighting climate change and its importance to Ireland's cultural heritage.
