Escaped farmed salmon in the wild salmon's spawning grounds is considered a serious environmental threat to many wild salmon strains. The most important measures to reduce the threat must be taken outside the fish farms. Several measures have been implemented out there and reported escapes have decreased sharply since the peak year of 2006. A corresponding decrease in the high proportions of escapees in the annual surveillance fishing in Namsen has not been observed. Licensees for salmon fishing in the Namsen watercourse and the fjord therefore feared the consequences, both for effects on wild salmon stocks and for restrictions in fishing for wild salmon. Goals: • To obtain more reliable knowledge about the proportion of escaped salmon in the spawning grounds. • To fish for escaped farmed salmon on a trip up the Namsen watercourse. Sub-goals • To study and test the most cost-effective methods for catching escaped farmed salmon in the sea (wedge nets, seines) and in rivers (rods, nets, nets, etc.). • To develop a specially built wedge net for cost-effective capture of escaped farmed salmon in the lower part of Namsen. • To find and describe the most cost-effective ways to reduce the increase in escaped farmed fish in watercourses in general, and in the Namsen watercourse in particular.
