The purpose of this work was to study the population genetics of the gray mullet (Mugil cephalus), in Sardinia, to determine the degree of variability of natural populations and possible degrees of differentiation between different populations. The project highlights the dangers of biodiversity loss as a result of controlled breeding practices and provides some indications on the protection of natural populations, controlling the aquaculture practices that involve a reduction of biodiversity.
