The overarching objective of the proposed plan is to undertake a programme of research to identify, measure, understand the underlying mechanisms and model (predict) qualitative (molecular) and quantitative (life history, abundance, Darwinian fitness) genetic and evolutionary responses of natural (and cultured) fish populations (primarily using salmonids as informative model organisms) to environmental variability caused by candidate anthropogenic factors e.g. global warming, fisheries, domestication selection, intra-specific hybridisation, aquaculture as a source of disease in wild populations, habitat change, bio-invasive organisms, including how these responses might be affected by the interaction of multiple factors, for example, intra-specific hybridisation and climate. The rationale of the plan is to build on proven research strengths and strategic advantages over other high performing research groups, which are: 1. A world leading and proven track record in the study of the impact of captive bred fish on wild recipient populations; 2. The substantial investment and research successes in fish population genetics achieved as part of the Beaufort Marine Research Award; 3. Valuable lessons learnt during the Beaufort e.g. not to over-disperse research effort, but to concentrate on key strengths; 4. The unique experimental infrastructure and regulatory (e.g. Section 14 authorisation) framework provided by the MI research facility at Newport; 5. The leverage provided for grant acquisition by the MI PI Award; 6. A developed network of high performing national (e.g. Marine Institute; University College Cork) and international research collaborators (e.g. Queen’s University Belfast; University of Glasgow; University of Turku: Institute of Marine Research, Norway; University of Montana, USA).
