For the fisheries administration, it has long been a desire to be able to identify the origin of unreported escaped salmon. There can be many reasons why fish escape from fish farms, but when escape is not reported, the cause is not found, and then it cannot be inserted either measures to prevent escape. The project TRACES, Tracing escaped farmed salmon by means of naturally occurring DNA markers, fatty acid profiles, trace elements and stable isotopes aims to investigate whether the salmon's natural properties can be used to identify which fish farms escape from. The project has investigated several methods for tracking. It is currently a DNA microsatellite markers that have given the clearest results. In a specific escape episode in Romsdalsfjorden, which was examined with DNA markers in TRACES, provided the method signal, and it was possible to identify from which cage the salmon had escaped. Other methods such as Lipid profiles, trace elements and isotopes, which have been investigated in TRACES will be able to provide important supplements information in cases where the fish in the individual farms are so genetically similar to DNA markers cannot provide answers alone.
