Pricing of frozen capelin for human consumption is mostly based on size and sex. The lowest price is for small males, but top price is paid for large females. During processing of capelin, regular size graders can be used for initial sorting of the fish, but a large number of large females are nevertheless lost, since it cannot be sorted from equally large males using conventional methods. This capelin has therefore ended up in mixed packaging or as fishmeal. There are at least two types of equipment that can possibly be adapted to sex sorting of capelin. On the one hand there is equipment based on computervision, developed by Marel, and on the other hand equipment based on light transmission measurements, designed by Triman Technologies, Canada, which is currently used for sex sorting of herring. The aim of this project is to evaluate both systems and do preliminary testing in order to assess the possibility of adapting the equipment for capelin processing. The results will determine if a larger R&D project will be initiated for the design and building of a processing line for capelin sex sorting. Such a processing line can double the export value of frozen capelin for human consumption according to conservative estimates.
