The aim was to survey when, and on which fishing grounds shrimp with black heads occur in the shrimp catches. Samples were taken in the Barents Sea with the aim to detect in which organs the black colour is present. The stomach content and the gonads as well as the enzyme-system as sources of dark colour were studied in the laboratory. Further we wanted to detect where in the production process the problem develops. Shrimp with black heads had been feeding on polychaetes and often had full stomachs, while other shrimp had less stomach content and had been feeding mainly on small copepods. The occurrence of black heads in the shrimp catch is a problem for the shrimp fleet. Black head shrimp is reported to occur in the northern Barents Sea in spring and summer. Logbook registration of observations of shrimp with black head in the catches would contribute to a detailed mapping of the feature. (1) Map problems for the industry related to occurrence of black heads in Pandlus borealis; (2) Identify what shrimp feeding pattern may result in black shrimp heads; (3) Study if polyphenol oxydase (PPO) in shrimp cause melanosis.
