Norwegian seal hunting is currently unprofitable and the catch value is only 20–30% of the first-hand income base, the rest is financed by government subsidies. In Vestisen, where the Norwegian catch quotas for harp seals in recent years have been 25,000–40,000 animals (2009–2012), only about a third of these quotas have been utilized, which is mainly due to poor profitability, partly due to strict restrictions on trade in marine mammal products. and limited flexibility for the boats participating in this catch. On-board production of seal oil is seen as an important and realistic measure to increase the profitability of the seal hunting industry and thus also help to ensure sustainable and adequate taxation. An unregulated seal population will consume large amounts of fish and at the same time cause increased problems with parasites and frightening of fish, especially from coastal fishing grounds (cf. several ""seal invasions"" throughout history). Goal: to develop a concept for flexible on-board production of seal oil for increased profitability in the seal hunting industry.
