Bait is one of the biggest costs of line fishing, and about 12,000 to 14,000 are sold annually tonnes of bait in Norway. An increase in the average price from 9 to up to NOK 15 / kg has led to bait costs now accounts for almost 15 to 20% of the operating costs of the line fleet compared with before costs that amounted to 5 to 8%. There is a need to reduce costs related to bait, at the same time as it is desirable to be able to use available residual raw material on board. The project "Production unit for restructured bait" is a continuation of the project ""Restructured bait and new production technology for bait for the autoline fleet"" where a concept analysis of three alternative production solutions for restructured bait was performed. The processes were based on the basic principles of size reduction, added by the structure donor to achieve the correct consistency of the bait, and filling the bait mass into the appropriate sleeve. It was recommended to take inuse the "cold" process that does not need heating and uses alginate as consistency enhancer. The purpose of the project was to; i) develop and build a production facility (prototype) for experimental purposes that can produce 500 kg of bait / h and ii) produce a first generation bait based on residual raw material and alginate.
