The MeSFiDe (Mediterranean Small craft Fishery and Development) project was approved in June 2006 within the European Union Interreg IIIB Archimed programme. It aimed at setting up an innovative and experimented model for the regeneration of artisanal fishery as an economically viable employment option, by making use of surplus and underused products. The model identified under used species, setting-up procedures for accountability, quality certification and seals showing that the product is environmentally friendly, providing a guarantee for the consumer, protecting the environment, and favouring the insertion of women and youth in the labour market. The project was developed in pilot areas in Sicily, Greece, Cyprus, and the results were transferred to Egypt also, chosen for its artisanal fishery traditions, presence of tourism and use of fish products to be developed. Goals: (1) Identification of Pilot Areas in the South-East of the Mediterranean. Analysis of technical and operational definition of the models to follow. - Implementation of the "Market to the Voice" as a model of innovative and sustainable development; (2) Market development through the promotion of underutilized species, traceability, a system of certification applied to the products of the sea; (3) Collection and analysis of data and marketing products, model revision; (4) Dissemination of results: Final Conference, website and database management.
