Up-scalable technology for purification of phycoerythrin containing extracts obtained from the Baltic seaweed Furcellaria lumbricalis was developed. The purification methods include enzymatic treatment of the biomass, ultrafiltration and ion exchange chromatography based techniques. Multi-step purification procedure allowed to obtain purified phycoerythrin at industrial amounts. Project focused on valorization of a unique renewable natural resource of Estonia – biomass from the algal community originating from Väinameri. An important result is the basic knowledge and technical solutions for large-scale production of phycoerythrin. This makes it possible to obtain a unique functional raw material for the food and cosmetics industries; similar proteinic pigments with phycoerythrin-like properties are not known to occur.
