In this project we intend to make a comprehensive analysis of the diversity, distribution and function of plasmids of bacterial communities that inhabit sponges in coral reefs exposed to different levels of pollution. The overall objective is to combine ecological and biotechnological approaches to simultaneously address important ecological issues and to exploit the biotechnological potential of sponge microbial symbionts. A high emphasis will be placed on the functional role of plasmids in the interactions between microorganisms-sponges-environment (ecology, biodiversity and environmental quality) and in the discovery of new enzymes and bioactive substances.
