The project aims to develop novel biosurfactants based on natural products. Surfactants are, for example, an important component of detergents, here they are essential for removing fats. At present, many surfactants are produced chemically from fossil raw materials. Biosurfactants can be produced by marine microorganisms, which are able to break down crude oil. In the course of the GlycoX project, the bacterium Alcanivorax borkumensis, originally discovered in the North Sea, will be exploited to produce novel biosurfactants. Additionally, possible applications for biosurfactants for example as environmental protection, for removing oil and polymer contamination, will be tested.
