In an interdisciplinary approach, a unique marine value chain is to be set up. This is intended to enable the production of novel active substances of marine origin using customized cell factories from the Streptomyces genusmake possible. The bacteria also come from the sea. They are therefore adapted to high salinity, which is believed to be crucial for the effective functioning of marine natural product synthesis pathways. Marine natural product gene clusters are often poorly expressed in conventional terrestrial microorganisms. With the help of synthetic biology and metabolic engineering, the microbial cell factories are to be built step by step. The establishment of biotechnological processes based on cellular mini-factories will later use seaweed as a raw material. These are considered to be one of the most promising renewable raw materials worldwide - they can be cultivated directly in the sea without fertilizers, pesticides and competition with valuable arable land.
