This one-year project studies the algal biodiversity of the Maltese islands in the central Mediterranean via an innovative multiphasic approach that includes morphological, genetic and biochemical analysis. Our studies show that there is widespread cryptic algal biodiversity in the Maltese islands that merits further scientific investigation. This project involves the identification, sustainable growth and chemical analysis of suitable algal candidates for application in the food industry. This would contribute to Malta’s blue economy by conserving and sustainably utilising our natural resources. The research aims to meet societal challenges by providing sustainable in vitro cultivation strategies for edible algae, to contribute towards food security.
