The aim of this work is to explore new opportunities for the environmentally friendly waste management of residual Baltic Sea red algal Furcellaria lumbricalis biomass what remains after commercial extraction of furcellaran. This residue contains mainly of cellulose and possibilities to obtain hydro- and aerogels of nanocellulose using supercritical CO2 extraction, cold treatment and mircofibrillation technique will be explored. With this approach zero-emission conversion will be worked out to fully utilize unique for Estonia natural resources. Today the manufacturing residue of Baltic red alga is left in piles or transported to nearby field as fertilizer. New possibilities to create nanocellulose structures amplify the potential of novel bioactive products and biomaterials in many areas.
