Truly unique marine metagenome banks, samples from the North Atlantic Garbage Patch, as well as extensive existing strain collections, eg from hot hydrothermal vents, will be searched for new enzymes using in silico and in vitro methods screened. Based on this and using multiplatform expression technologies, the largest collection of plastic-active enzymes will be created. In addition, an extensive strain collection of plastic-degrading bacteria and fungi will be created. In a further approach, the best enzymes and the most efficient microorganisms are implemented in innovative biotechnological processes in feasibility studies (“proof of concept stage”). For this purpose, plastizymes are coupled to anchor peptides, applied to surfaces and their binding properties (binding, hydrolysis, degradation) of nano- and microplastics are tested under natural conditions in seawater. In addition, new sensors for the detection of micro- and nanoplastics are being established.
