Actual genetic problems of Estonian and North European animal farming and aquaculture will be investigated by molecular, population, ecological and veterinary genetic methods. The principal aim is to estimate genetic diversity, relatedness and differentiation of breeds, strains and populations of farm animals (cattle, horse, sheep), birds (quail) and species used in aquaculture (Atlantic salmon, sea trout, rainbow trout, pikeperch, perch and noble crayfish) in local and North European scale by using DNA markers. The aim of functional genomics studies is to reveal and map functionally important genomic regions that are associated with local adaptation and domestication in Atlantic salmon as a model species. The results will be used for setting conservation priorities and for developing breeding and conservation plans.
