The Danube sturgeon species are among the most valuable mainly because of the large demand on the global market for their meat and caviar. Currently, that wild populations from Romania are at the brink of extinction, so that efforts are focused on developing performant systems for aquaculture as an alternative measure to reduce the pressure resulting from overfishing. The objective of the current project proposal is to validate in the industrial environment a technology of selection, rearing and genetic amelioration for sturgeon hybrid strain (Best beluga) with superior morphological and productive traits with the aim of increasing the profitability and competitiveness of aquaculture activities in our country. Early sex determination in sturgeons is one of the most important challenge both for scientists and fish farmers. The validation of biochemical and molecular markers and the setup of precise method for sexing would allow the separation on sexes since an early age and would represent an enormous progress for the caviar industry, but also for wild population conservation. Also, the identification of molecular and biochemical markers associated with production traits and meat quality can represent the premise for the selection and breeding of individual with superior quantitative and qualitative characteristics. Thus, a markers assisted selection will be carried on for these species with highly commercial importance. Not for the last, the implementation of an appropriate technological and operational management along with the evaluation of technological comfort and of technological efficiency parameters in hybrid strain of Best beluga will lead to the validation in the industrial environment of an innovative technology of selection, rearing and amelioration for these species. The final effect will be represented by the increase of efficiency and profitability in sturgeon aquaculture.
