Summary is project aims at understanding the interaction between infectious salmon anemia virus (ISAV), an orthomyxoviral infecting salmon, and red blood cells (RBCs). Combining pathology, virology and immunology, including also proteomic analyses, in an interdisciplinary approach, the project will address a mechanism of disease pathogenesis. Infectious salmon anaemia (ISA) is an economically important disease in Atlantic salmon farming, and appears as a disseminated, fatal infection of the cardiovascular system leading to bleedings, severe anemia and haemophagocytosis.
Previously we discovered large amounts of virus attaching to RBCs during ISAV infection, and we believe this interaction is significant for disease pathogenesis. Surprisingly the scientific literature is in essence devoid of descriptions considering virus-RBC interaction as a mechanism for disease pathogenesis of haemagglutinating viruses. Thus, the results obtained from this project could be of significance for the pathogenesis of diseases caused by other haemagglutinating viruses.
The project will fund one Ph.D. student in addition to part time scientists, a part time technician and running costs. The project is well defined within our research group "Experimental Pathology" focusing on pathogenesis in salmon diseases and will expand from the NRC-funded "ISA HPR0" project (NFR 207024) ending in December 2015, with Dr. Falk as lead scientists, and the NRC-funded "ISAV early infection" project (NFR 244110) starting in October 2015, with Dr. Aamelfot as lead scientist. The project meets the strategic research priorities set by the Norwegian Veterinary Institute, NVI.
