An increasing number of jellyfish have been detected - both along the Norwegian coast and in other sea areas. Jellyfish can be both consumers and competitors of fish larvae and fish fry, and can then help reduce fish stocks and create problems for the aquaculture industry. Jellyfish can also create problems for other activities such as tourism, boat traffic and industry that use seawater as cooling water. At the same time, there is a not insignificant market for jellyfish for human consumption. Jellyfish contain collagen, which is a well-paid raw material for e.g. pharmacy and food industry. A potential for commercial utilization of jellyfish in Norway is primarily linked to exports. But the domestic market is also interesting, especially with regard to feed production for the aquaculture industry, as a pharmaceutical raw material, and as a possible "functional food" in markets that demand specially adapted food. Goal to map whether there is a basis for utilizing jellyfish as a value creation resource. The project has the following sub-goals: 1. Mapping of species, distribution and volume. 2. Commercial opportunities for utilization of jellyfish in Norway. 3. Catching and catching technology. Through the project, it will be clarified whether there is a basis for moving forward in a main project.
