LIFE REFISH intends to create the first demonstration biorefinery for fish and shellfish raw materials that, through the application of the most advanced technology, allows the valorization of these fishery and shellfish resources, currently underused, into high added value products with great potential for market. The objectives and scope of LIFE REFISH are: 1) Determine the composition, the optimal conditions and the necessary parameters for the previous handling, conditioning and storage of the discards. 2) Expand and demonstrate the feasibility of a demonstration-scale biorefinery capable of valorizing 300 kg/h of waste and by-products. 3) Validate the performance and commercial value of the eight high added value products resulting from the valorization process. 4) Take the necessary measures to prepare the production on an industrial scale (4 tons/h) and the commercialization. 5) Evaluate the environmental, social and economic repercussions. 6) Sensitize the relevant target audience on the environmental problems related to discards and the EU environmental policies to curb this practice.
