"The pelagic consumer industry today has large costs associated with packaging its products. Although each unit may seem to cost relatively little, the large volume for the entire industry will raise the total cost level to about NOK 200 million per year. A reduction of these costs by a few percent will result in interesting cost reductions for both the factory in question and the industry as a whole. Today, the packaging costs in the pelagic consumer industry are calculated to be about the same as the labor costs. There is therefore a great deal of interest in the industry to reduce these expenses. On the other hand, a number of work has been carried out previously both at company level and in which FHF has been involved. Production is standardized, automated and today's packaging is accepted in most markets. It is robust and can withstand the physical stresses that come with the distribution of pelagic fish throughout the distribution chain in different countries and under different conditions. Reduced packaging costs will provide major financial benefits for fish producers / suppliers / exporters. It will also be possible to obtain benefits in the form of e.g. improved handling, labeling and traceability. Main objective of the project: • To develop an alternative packaging for the pelagic industry's main product (20 kilo carton for frozen round fish and fillet). • To develop the alternative packaging so that it is at least 10% cheaper than the current solution without compromising quality, functionality and acceptance in the market. • To develop an alternative packaging for 10 kg mackerel cartons that is at least 10% cheaper than the current solution without compromising quality, functionality and acceptance in the market."
