During the production of mackerel fillets for export, a blemish-free appearance is desirable. Some of the mackerel normally have blemishes. These must be manually handled and sorted out from orderly production, and the blemishes must be trimmed away. This trimming and post-cleaning is both labor-intensive and a very expensive part of the production of mackerel fillets. In order to increase competitiveness, the pelagic industry wants to automate this process of detecting blemishes, sorting mackerel with blemishes and removing blemishes. Optimar AS has worked a lot with machine vision in recent years, and wants to look at the possibilities of developing a machine vision system that detects blemishes in mackerel fillets, with an associated mechanical system that sorts them out. Main goal: To develop a machine vision system that detects which mackerel fillets have blemishes and further separates these automatically so that they can be corrected manually. Sub-goals: • To find suitable technical equipment, such as cameras and light sources, to take pictures of mackerel fillets in production. • To develop algorithm(s) for the detection of blemishes on these images. • Carrying out the design and production of a prototype in accordance with the requirements specification, where capacity, HSE and ease of cleaning will be emphasised, among other things. • To test and evaluate the system on a smaller scale, either in a laboratory environment or in industry.
