"Shellfish Forum has conducted a survey in the Norwegian market to assess consumer perceptions of peeled shrimps from various suppliers and regions. Previously, a survey was conducted in England where consumers were presented with Norwegian peeled shrimps. In this survey, the Norwegian shrimps performed very well compared to products from Canada and Greenland. In England, considered to be the main market for cooked peeled shrimps, there has been a longstanding use and tradition of such shrimps. Similarly, success has been achieved in building a market in Sweden and partially in Finland. In Norway, there has been no success in building a similar market for peeled shrimps. There are many myths about the quality of peeled shrimps, and there has been no tradition of buying such products from the freezer aisle. Over time, the retail industry has expanded the frozen seafood segment with a variety of products imported from different parts of the world. The category has gradually gained a visible space in the freezer aisles, and this could open up the opportunity to introduce one or more products of Norwegian peeled shrimps in competition with imported products. Frozen peeled shrimps from Norwegian producers should be able to increase their market share by better adapting the product to Norwegian consumption patterns and providing consumers with improved information on the use of peeled shrimps. A prerequisite for selecting what to work on is gaining insight into the attitudes and perceptions consumers have about frozen peeled shrimps. What do they consider the most significant barriers, and how can we better tailor the product to the applications that are relevant? To conduct such a survey, the Shellfish Forum has planned to carry out concept development in collaboration with TNS Gallup. The Seafood Council is a conversation partner in the project and directly participates in the development work."
