Summary Since 2005, SINTEF Energiforskning AS has had significant research and development activity in the salted fish and clipfish industry. The main focus has been on a review of companies, drying plants and measurements of drying parameters, air distribution, speed and energy efficiency. Furthermore, on the basis of measurements and assessments, calculations of facilities and drying systems, storage of salted fish and clipfish and energy consumption have been carried out.
Studies over the past two years have provided new and important knowledge about the drying dependence of fish species, size, drying temperature and humidity, air speed and pause in drying.
Most interestingly, however, the drying rate after an initial drying is significantly lower and less dependent on air condition and speed than previously thought. The final drying can therefore be carried out in a considerably simpler and more economical way than in the expensive drying tunnels.
Goal: to determine drying speed depending on climatic conditions during the last part of the drying process and propose technological solutions to ensure even dryness, increased productivity and reduced energy and operating costs.
Sub-goals:
1. Drying speed in the second part of the drying process
To determine the drying speed by measurements for relevant fish (cod and pollock) depending on temperature, air conditions and speed, so that you can choose a drying plan that provides the best possible economic operation.
2. Drying facilities and capacity utilization
To prepare proposals and guidelines for changes in operating conditions and technical solutions, increased capacity and reduced energy consumption in today's drying tunnels.
3. Plant for final drying of cuttlefish
To determine air volumes, velocities, arrangements, etc. which is required for rational and energy-efficient drying in the second drying phase and provide suggestions for alternative technical solutions.
4. Transfer of expertise and measurements at facilities
To provide the industry with increased knowledge and information about opportunities for greater capacity and reduced costs.
