Summary In recent years, Norwegian herring quotas have been reduced. This has led to overcapacity and reduced margins in the agricultural industry. The project's overall idea is that further processing of residual raw materials from the pelagic consumer industry will improve resource utilization, and provide increased value creation and profitability for the sector. The research and development work focuses on product and market development for belly strips and "bits and pieces" from NVG herring. Utilization of these two fractions for consumer products is a new application in the pelagic industry. The project will be the platform for the use of raw materials that are not currently utilized, and contribute to increased sustainability and better utilization of the resources that are already being harvested. It is an objective to achieve a higher price for the mentioned residual raw materials. FHF project "Residual raw materials from NVG herring for consumption" will study for market and product potential in Russia, Poland, Turkey, China and Japan, as well as carry out an initial raw material testing of belly strips and "bits and pieces". The survey will result in the selection of three business partners (focus company) in three of the markets (focus market). The selection will be made in mid-September 2012. Characterization of the raw material, including durability and mapping of seasonal variations, will also be done in the FHF project. The MVP project will follow the opportunities that emerge from this work, and further develop product specifications in close collaboration with the focus companies. This includes product development, product testing, competence exchange through workshops, establishment of production methods, as well as final completion and launch of new consumer products. The project will contribute to the establishment of business collaboration with the focus companies. The marketing work includes organization and implementation of workshop (s), development and testing of product samples, follow-up of the focus companies, and coordination of the partner and focus companies' development and marketing activities.
