Summary The study has revealed that there is a significant income potential for the Norwegian pelagic industry in utilizing secondary raw materials to a greater extent. Herring roe for consumer use has a long tradition in several countries, especially in Japan based on supplies from Pacific herring. Global trade in herring roe has peaked at over 30,000 tonnes, but is now estimated to be around 15,000 tonnes. Japan is historically the largest single market with annual consumption in the order of 10-14,000 tonnes. Single roe from NVG herring will for most applications be able to function as an alternative and a substitute for capelin roe. Roe with a good degree of maturity, ie with good texture, can be sold frozen to Japan and some other countries in Asia at better prices than capelin roe. There is also a market in Europe, and especially in Eastern Europe, for ripe herring roe with good texture. In Eastern Europe, it is also possible to sell immature roe at lower prices. This is used for mixing with other roe in oil-based spreadable "salads" packed on glass. Norwegian industry should aim to produce a stable quantity of at least 3,000 tonnes of herring roe per year. Global market potential for our type of roe is estimated at 7,500 tonnes, but the market must experience stable supplies and quality over time before offering too large volumes. The products must be differentiated in the market by selling roe with different degrees of maturity with different quality grades. The best quality will then raise the average price level for Norwegian deliveries.
