Research and development (R&D) operators of fish farming in Finland seek actively new value added products that would improve the competitiveness of the livelihood against global imported mass products in markets. The aim of this programme is to help the Finnish fish farming industry diversify its product supply and better adapt to the global market. Market research and studies on the feasibility of introducing new species (i.e. European whitefish, pearch, pike-pearch, caviar production of vendace) in food fish farming in Finland are carried out to evaluate the aquaculture potential of these species. The most promising candidate species are selected for further research which is carried out in separated projects. Goals: (1) Estimated domestic market demand and price level of species under evaluation; (2) Estimated production cost of canditate species in intensive food fish production; (3) Estimated profitability of production based on bio- economy models; (4) Select the most promising canditate fos further R&D work.
