Summary Norway is one of the foremost countries in the world in terms of production of farmed fish. For Norway, salmon and trout still make up the majority of production, but farming of marine species such as cod, halibut and others has a positive development. In its strategy for a competitive Norwegian aquaculture industry, the government aims to facilitate the Norwegian aquaculture industry to maintain its position as a leading international producer and exporter.
This project aims to meet a need for more knowledge about how the mechanisms for trade in current farmed species work, with a view to using such knowledge in the introduction of and trade in new farmed species. In this way, the industry will be better able to meet new market challenges, competing producers, and provide input to the authorities 'and organizations' strategy work. This project is also important in view of the fact that efforts are also being made to fish other species, such as halibut, and trade in these species will meet the same challenges as farmed cod.
To gain insight into and develop an understanding of the factors that have been crucial in achieving success for some selected farming species.
Sub-objectives
• To map the pattern in trade for the above-mentioned species.
• To map consumer preferences and competitive conditions in the European seafood market.
• To understand which competition structures affect the trade in farmed fish.
• To understand the framework conditions for production and export with a special focus on trade barriers.
