"The Norwegian shrimp industry has undergone a significant change in recent years. High oil prices and low market prices have created challenging operating conditions. As a result, several shrimp boats have been laid up, and many shrimp factories have been shut down. Various measures have been taken to reverse this trend, and the project ""Living Shrimp - from field to reception"" is one of the new focus areas targeting coastal fishing and small to medium-sized shrimp boats and reception facilities. The project aims to investigate the possibility of catching, processing, and storing live shrimp (Pandalus borealis) and is a collaboration between Møreforsking, Sirevåg AS, Lyngen Shrimp, Rogaland Fish Sales Association, and the Shrimp Forum in FHL. With a focus on trawling time, proper catch handling, the shrimp's basic biological requirements, and animal welfare, Møreforsking has developed practical methods that make it possible to transport live shrimp from the fishing grounds to the reception with high survival rates and good raw material quality. By receiving deliveries of live shrimp on land, reception facilities can utilize them in a much wider range of products than they have been able to up to now. The shrimp can be cooked in EU-approved facilities and sold fresh or MAP (Modified Atmosphere Packaging) packaged to markets such as France or England. The shrimp can be conditioned and sold as fresh raw to Japan, and perhaps the shrimp can be repackaged and sent live to the Spanish market. The project is carried out by the Fisheries and Aquaculture Research Fund (FHF), while Rekeforum at FHL is the project manager on behalf of FHF."
