The capelin in the Barents Sea is currently managed as an ""on and off"" fishery. This means that in some years varying volumes are taken out, while in others capelin is not caught. Such a management strategy entails major challenges for business players in terms of both capacity and market adjustment. At the same time, the best-paying market for capelin is related to a relatively small volume of consumer products from the capelin stock. An alternative harvesting strategy for capelin, within a biologically sustainable framework, will therefore be to harvest a more stable but limited volume of capelin, tailored to the best paid capelin products. This project will map the value creation potential and discuss how this potential can be utilized. Goals: • To increase revenues from the capelin stock • To create better continuity in deliveries to important markets • To utilize the market potential for capelin better • To maintain and develop competence related to the capture and production of consumer products from the capelin stock
