The project deals on the potential use of RSW (Refrigerated Sea Water) systems for cooling the catch on board some of the small fishing vessels, initially focusing on vessels engaged in fishing for snow crab. Surveys, calculations, and meetings with the two participating fishermen in the project revealed that installing an RSW system on a crab boat is technically feasible. The RSW system would reduce mortality and allow the crab to be stored longer on board, enabling harvesting from fields further away from the reception stations than is currently possible. However, the challenge with the RSW system is that the price is relatively high when supplied by Norwegian quality suppliers. Alternative and cheaper system solutions have been identified, but their quality must be verified before they can be used on a larger scale. The profitability for fishermen is questionable if the system can only be used for crab fishing, as crab boats engage in other types of fishing outside the crab season. Handling flake ice, which is currently used to cool the fish catch, is relatively cumbersome and space-consuming. If an RSW system can eliminate this extra work, investment in such a system would be more appealing. Previous experience from trials shows that RSW systems can be used to cool white fish with good results and could also be advantageous during fishing for sea crabs.
